Meanwhile BW Group chairman Andreas Sohmen-Pao maps out its role in the consolidation game. One of the largest owners on the Singapore-flag Maersk Group is undergoing its own changes, however, Rene Piil Pedersen, group representative Asia Pacific & Managing Director explains its commitment to the city state.

A new kid on the block is India’s Elektrans and Singapore-based group ceo Michael Elwert explains it is setting up its corporate headquarters in the city state because: “Singapore is key to us because it’s the global maritime hub offering so many opportunities by being the right place at the right time.”

On the home front Singapore’s own big names in the industry are looking to the future to ensure they stay relevant and competitive. The nation’s ports are planning ahead with the world’s second largest container port run by PSA investing heavily in technology and R&D, and industrial gateway port Jurong Port looking to best in class and expand its role as a regional hub.

With the sharp downturn in the offshore market shipyards Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Shipyard are focusing on areas outside the drilling market such as the natural gas markets.

In the container shipping sector that has witnessed rapid consolidation Singapore’s Temasek Holdings decided to sell Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) to the world’s third largest container line CMA CGM.

Going forward the Singapore government clearly remains committed to the maritime sector both in terms of policies and investing future technologies, infrastructure and training.
