SMART SHIPPING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED
All of shipping’s stakeholders have something to gain, but just how much depends on how the industry adapts. Smart shipping is not about smart ships, Smart shipping is about teamwork and transforming a fleet of stand-alone ships into a coordinated network devoted to the efficient transport of cargo. That means that different groups within a shipping company must work together – personnel management policies are absolutely central to smart shipping. This will need some pretty fundamental change in some of shipping’s traditionally adversarial relationships. It will involve a smart shipping company integrating with ship designers, builders, equipment suppliers, ports and, importantly, cargo owners.
Ships themselves must be designed and built as ‘digital ready’, they should be delivered with low-power wide area networks (LPWAN) so that digital communication is possible within all areas of the ship, enabling machine-tomachine connectivity as in ‘the internet of things’.
Cargo owners have a key role to play – shipping, after all, is only one link in the global transport chain. The integrated transport of cargo by the most efficient route is still ‘science fiction’.
