The debate

What is the parliamentary debate?

Some of the issues now facing international shipping are highly complex, generating widely differing views from across the industry.  Seatrade in its conferences has for some years used the parliamentary debate as a format in which the many different viewpoints on complex subjects can be debated.

The Seatrade Parliamentary Debate, following the tradition of debate in parliaments and universities around the world, chooses a major issue which divides opinion in the maritime world, and invites speakers for and against a motion to put forward their opinions, before opening up the debate to all participants. The Debate concludes with a vote by all attendees, and the motion will either be carried (i.e. the majority will agree that the industry is not ready for smart shipping), or defeated (the majority will agree that it is ready for smart shipping).

This year Seatrade Maritime Middle East will host a debate on the critical issue of the industry’s preparedness to adopt digital technology, under the expert chairmanship of Jasamin Fichte, Managing Partner, Fichte & Co.

The Motion: This House believes that the shipping industry is not ready to embrace smart shipping.

Speakers for the motion:

Khalid Hashim, Managing Director, Precious Shipping
Ali Shehab Ahmad, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC)
Captain David Stockley, COO, Oman Shipping Company

Speakers against the motion:

Rene Kofod-Olsen, CEO, Topaz Energy Marine
Oskar Levander, SVP Concepts & Innovation, Rolls-Royce Marine
Drew Brandy, SVP Maritime Market Strategy, Inmarsat

Smart Shipping has the potential to transform the fundamentals of ship operation, with digital technology and big data driving radical new solutions up to and including autonomous ships.  But what does the industry actually want from these new technologies, how real are the efficiencies they offer and what changes to the regulatory framework would be needed prior to significant implementation?
