In a world of headlines dominated by autonomy, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, "people" can be easily forgotten. This session discusses the importance of the human element in maritime safety, security and environmental protection.

The IMO has agreed to cut shipping's total GHG emission 50% by 2050 and pursue efforts to phase out these emissions altogether. While some industry bodies praised the strategy, others criticized it for not being ambitious or direct enough in outlining decarbonisation measures.

Merchant shipping as the most efficient and cost-effective method of international transportation is essential for future sustainable economic growth. With the IMO going into a 'green' overdrive to regulate merchant shipping, the panel will deliberate whether shipping can continue to provide a dependable, low-cost means of transporting goods globally, facilitating commerce and helping to create prosperity among nations and people.
